Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea

Animal Companions and Mounts

Animal companions in Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea: taming wild animals, companion skills, favourite foods that trigger hyper mode, and pet roles.

Quick answer

Every animal has a base skill and learns more as you care for it, feeding a companion its favourite food triggers a hyper state that boosts all of its skills, and cats restore stamina on demand while dogs protect you from wild animals.

Animal companions are the mechanic that separates Echoes of Teradea from a straight farming sim. They are not pets that follow you around — they are the tools that open the map, and the ones you travel with decide which parts of Teradea you can actually reach.

What companions do

  • Reach hidden areas that neither jumping nor ladders can solve.
  • Destroy obstacles — rocks and fallen trees in particular.
  • Uncover secrets and treasure scattered across the world.
  • Cross rough terrain that would otherwise stop you.
  • Improve your own stats, in some cases, once trained.

Natsume treats companions as essential to exploration and adventure rather than optional flavour. The map is built around what they can do.

Every animal has skills

Each animal comes with a base skill that you can see from the moment you acquire it, and then additional skills it learns as you care for it. The shop lists the animals and their skills side by side, so the stock is a genuine decision point rather than a menu of skins.

Because skills grow with care, an animal you have kept since early on is meaningfully better than the same species bought later. Raising one thing properly beats owning six and feeding none of them.

Favourite food and hyper mode

Every animal has a favourite food. Feed it the right thing and it enters a hyper state in which all of its skills are boosted at once.

The clearest example from early play: a well-raised cat fed an egg grants, in one go, protection from cold, protection from heat, the ability to stay up late — the game calls it Wakefulness — and extra stamina. That is a large chunk of the game's buff system delivered by one pet interaction.

The practical rule: find out what each companion likes, and carry a stack of it.

Taming wild animals

The method is consistent, whether you are after a farm animal, a mount or a battle-ready companion.

  1. Approach slowly. Crouch, or at least do not run at it. Running spooks most animals.
  2. Pet it, then feed it. Doing both in one visit progresses the bond. Petting alone is not enough for the tougher ones.
  3. Come back and repeat. The next day is usually enough for a horse; larger animals take longer.
  4. Finish the tame and take it home. A tamed horse joins the farm herd for free.

Aggressive animals complicate step one. If something charges you, drop food on the ground to distract it, then approach and pet while it is occupied. Some animals in dangerous areas will chase rather than flee, and getting caught costs you the items you were carrying — see wild animals.

Pet roles

The two obvious pets have genuinely different jobs:

PetWhat it gives you
CatStamina restoration on demand — pet it a few times a day, on roughly a three-hour cooldown — plus a status boost when fed its favourite food
DogProtection from wild animals, which is the game's own suggested answer to the wilderness

The cat is the better general pick for most players, because wild animals do not attack constantly and stamina is a limit every single day. The dog is the right answer if you plan to spend long stretches in dangerous terrain.

Mounts

Your mount is the single best early acquisition in the game. Taming a wild horse south of Bloomfield Village costs nothing, saves you a large amount of stamina every day, and lets you ride past wild animals instead of fighting your nerve. You can also dash on foot, but dashing drains stamina, so the mount pays for itself immediately.

The animal bag

Your travelling animals travel with you in an Animal Bag, accessible from the campsite menu on the pad. That is how companions come along on expeditions, and why the "take a companion, not just a mount" habit works.

What to build first

  1. A horse. Free, permanent, saves stamina from day four onwards.
  2. A cat. Stamina regeneration and a status buff in one slot.
  3. A bear or other obstacle-breaker. These turn "there is a hidden area up there" into a route.
  4. A lamb and a chicken. Not companions, but they feed the crafting and quest chains, and a lamb is a prerequisite for the bag upgrade.

How the farm side of animal keeping works — feeding, hearts, produce — is on livestock. The dangers companions protect you from are on wild animals, and the terrain they open up is on map and exploration.
