Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea

Livestock and Animal Care

Caring for livestock in Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea: cows, chickens, sheep and lambs, food instead of feed, favourite foods and heart levels.

Quick answer

You are given a cow and a bird at the start. Any food item can be given directly to an animal to count as feeding it, heart levels rise quickly from feeding and petting, and you want one of each animal type because quests keep asking for different produce.

You are handed a cow and a bird on your first day, and the herd you build from there is the most reliable income in Teradea. Livestock care in Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea is deliberately fast to run — the trick is knowing what actually counts as care and what is busywork.

Official launch-trailer frame — a deer and a horse in the wild. Tameable animals join the farm herd on the same care rules.

The livestock you will keep

  • Cows — the money animal. Milk is your main daily sale once hearts are up.
  • Chickens — eggs, and eggs double as favourite food for other animals.
  • Sheep and lambs — wool. Wool becomes cloth, and cloth becomes outfits and quest deliveries.
  • Horses — your mount. Tameable in the wild for free, and not farm produce at all.

Natsume's own description also lists "cows, sheep, chickens, and more", so expect the species list to be longer than the four confirmed by name. The bonus cow packs add pink Mooberry cows and yellow Moonana cows with their own milk.

Feeding: skip the feed maker

The game offers you a machine that turns weeds into animal feed. It costs twenty weeds per single feed, and it is the worst trade in the game.

Any food item given directly to an animal counts as feeding it. A mushroom picked up on the walk to the barn works exactly as well as a crafted feed. Do that instead.

Grass is the honest middle path: it needs no watering, regrows two or three times per planting, and the forest sprite on your own farm hands you three fresh grass seeds every third day.

Heart levels rise fast

Livestock hearts climb quickly if you feed and pet every day. Creators playing early builds reported animals hitting high hearts within a few in-game days, and high hearts mean top-grade produce — bigger eggs, richer milk. Compared to the slow bonding of older farming games, this one rewards a two-minute daily routine with immediate returns.

That also means there is very little reason to neglect an animal. Feeding and petting is the whole job.

Care rules that are easy to get wrong

  • Feed before you let animals out. Hungry animals left to graze will eat your growing crops.
  • Fence your beds. A fence removes the crop-eating risk entirely, fed or not.
  • Feed in the pen. Putting feed into the pens lets the game handle distribution automatically, which is faster than walking to each animal.
  • Keep a spread of species. Quests repeatedly ask for different items — wool, eggs, milk. One of each animal type beats a barn full of cows.
  • Keep the bonus cow if you have it. Its milk sells for a multiple of standard milk, reported at roughly three times the price. The trade-off is that it occupies a slot you could give to a different species.

Getting new animals

Wild animals can be befriended, and the process is the same whether you are after a farm animal or a travelling companion: find it, get close without spooking it, pet it and feed it, then repeat on a following day to finish taming. Bigger and more aggressive animals take longer and some of them will chase you first — see animal companions for the full method and wild animals for what happens when it goes wrong.

How livestock fits the money side

Because hearts climb fast and top-grade produce sells for more, livestock is the best early income in the game. A small herd running on free forage food costs nothing to maintain and pays every single day, which is a better return than a single big harvest you plant once a season. The money guide works through the arithmetic, and tools and crafting covers turning wool into cloth and outfits.
